For those who haven't heard about it, this Google Doodle is celebrating today's launch of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at the CERN research lab in France. It's being hailed as the greatest physics experiment in history.
The ring depicted is actually a circular tunnel 17 miles long that is deep underground below the French-Swiss border, and it'll be used to accelerate particles up to 99.99% of the speed of light. The first test today just sent a single particle around in a clockwise direction; the next test will send a particle counter-clockwise. If all goes well, they'll then send particles in BOTH directions, and smash them into each other to study the reaction. They actually hope to recreate the Big Bang on a very small scale, so they think they'll be learning about the origins of the universe. I doubt it, but I'm sure they'll learn a lot of cool stuff. | | |
| If a good game of soccer is scarce ... ultimate frisbee will do (in a pinch).
** all credit for the pics goes to my dad; he got a new lens for his digital camera, so he got in some free practice on some action shots. *** there are a bunch more pictures in my Xanga photos for those who care to see them; I also uploaded the same batch to my Facebook with captions

| After already spending an afternoon up at the Stockton courthouse way back on January 31st and calling in multiple times since, I again am looking at another phone call at 4pm this afternoon to see if I have been selected to serve during a trial that is projected to last three or four weeks. Those who know me also know that I work in a tax office - an office small enough that I can't simply divide my work amongst "all the other tax preparers." It's just my boss and I: he does all the individual appointments, and I do the business returns. We're already swamped as it is, so I honestly don't know what would happen if I am suddenly whisked away from work for the better part of a month. All that to say: I'd appreciate your prayers that God would either have me excused from this trial, or that I would at least have a sympathetic judge who will allow me to postpone my service three months until after tax season. ** Edit at 3:20pm ** God is quick; the judge's clerk just called and said I've been released. Praise the Lord!! (and back to work, since April 15 still isn't here yet ) | | |
| It's been two years (minus two days) since the first and only time I have ever asked "Will you be mine?", so today is a fitting occasion to pull this picture out again. Happy Valentine's Day, babe!

| A stressed out woman sped down a busy boulevard. As she raced toward an intersection, the light turned yellow, and the gentleman she was tailgating stopped at the crosswalk instead of punching through ahead of the red light. The woman honked furiously at missing her chance to get through the intersection, and she screamed in frustration while dropping her cell phone and makeup. As she was still in mid-rant, she heard a tap on her window and looked up into the face of a very serious police officer. The officer ordered her to exit her car with her hands up. He took her to the police station where she was searched, finger printed, photographed, and placed in a holding cell. After a couple of hours, a policeman approached the cell and opened the door. She was escorted back to the booking desk where the arresting officer was waiting with her personal effects. He said, "I'm very sorry for this mistake. You see, I pulled up behind your car while you were blowing your horn, flipping off the guy in front of you, and cussing a blue streak at him. Then I noticed the 'What Would Jesus Do?' bumper sticker, the 'Choose Life' license plate holder, the 'Follow Me to Sunday-School' bumper sticker, and the chrome-plated Christian fish emblem on the trunk. Naturally, I assumed you had stolen the car." | | |
